There is an excellent opportunity for the Engineering Graduates in Indian Railways, the largest Central Government Organization in India.

Section Engineers:
There are many advantages of Section Engineer jobs. Firstly, it is a Central Government job it gives an opportunity of permanent job with job security, high salary, social status, many Central Government facilities such as Quarters, Free AC Railway Pass etc. The VI Pay Commission has enhanced the Pay Scale to a Gross Starting Salary of above Rs.30, 000/-.

Section Engineer is the highest post which is recruited through Railway Recruitment Board meant for B-Tech and BE Students. The other posts include JE's for Diploma Candidates and ALP (Assistant Loco Pilot) for ITI Candidates.

Different branches:

  • Section Engineer - Mechanical / Automobile Engineering
  • Section Engineer - Electrical Engineering
  • Section Engineer - Electronics and Communication Engineering
  • Section Engineer - Civil Engineering
  • Section Engineer - Instrumentation Engineering

Eligibility:
The Educational Qualification is BTech, or BE from any one of the above mentioned branches of Engineering. The upper age limit in general category is 33 years. However students of reservation have relaxation as per the rules. As already mentioned RRB does not give the detailed syllabus. Hence students must prepare complete engineering syllabus i.e., GATE Syllabus. The paper will be for 150 marks. 70 percent questions will be technical and 30 percent non-technical. Technical questions are from the concerned branch and non-technical are from G.K., Arithmetic and Reasoning. The questions are multiple choices with 1/3 negative for wrong answer.
Also advertised are Junior Engineer Posts for which the students having diploma in respective branch are eligible. The students pursuing BE/ BTech. through lateral entry scheme can grab the opportunity. One very special feature about the current notification is about ALP's (Assistant Loco Pilot) i.e. till recent past only ITI passed were eligible to apply but now students with Diploma / Degree are also eligible for such posts.

In general there is no minimum qualifying mark for RRB exams. The number of students selected is according to number of posts. Hence, when the paper is easy the qualifying mark goes up while for tough paper it will be less. Once the student gets selected in the written examination further there will be no interview. He only has to produce his original certificates for verification and followed by Medical fitness examination. Hence posts of SE and JE are also called as single stage recruitment exams. Regarding ALP for which BE/ BTech are also eligible, a student has to qualify psychology test after qualifying in written. Thus we can see there is a great opportunity for many of the brilliant and hard-working Engineer Graduates to choose the Section Engineer job of Indian Railways Services as one of the careers.
